Sickle cell student aces exams from hospital bed, dreams of medicine

Bill Olenyo, a student battling sickle cell anemia, has defied the odds by excelling in his 2025 KCSE exams. Despite being hospitalized during the examination period, he achieved a B grade and now aims to study medicine at Kenyatta University. His determination has drawn admiration from family, educators, and the local community.

Olenyo’s journey began years earlier when he scored 393 marks in his KCPE exams, securing a place at Kwale Boys High School. The institution, known for its strong academic record, posted a mean grade of 9.3 in the 2025 KCSE results, with 97.57% of its students qualifying for university.

Just days before his exams, Olenyo was admitted to Kwale sub-county hospital. Instead of missing the tests, he sat them from a room next to the maternity wing, with support from county officials, hospital staff, and his school. A vehicle was even sent from Kwale Boys to ensure he could complete his practical papers. His results were impressive: straight As in English, a B plus in biology and chemistry, and a C plus in mathematics. His grandfather proudly called him a 'lion' for his courage in facing both health struggles and academic challenges.

Olenyo’s success highlights the combined efforts of his school, medical staff, and local government. With a B grade secured, he is now a step closer to his goal of studying medicine. His story serves as a testament to resilience and the impact of community support in overcoming adversity.
