Seberang Jaya’s RM371 Million General Hospital Opens with Expanded Care

The new nine-storey Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) building, a modern general hospital, officially began operations on May 5, 2023. Valued at RM371 million, the facility introduces modern medical services to Seberang Perai residents. Patients in the area will now have easier access to specialist care without needing to travel to Penang Hospital (HPP).

The RM371 million HSJ building expands capacity with 316 extra beds, six operating theatres, and seven ICU beds. It also includes a 16-bed Cardiac Rehabilitation Ward dedicated to children’s cardiology. The new structure improves patient flow, enhances staff working conditions, and strengthens healthcare delivery in the region.

As a Type 2 hospital, HSJ serves as the main referral centre for the Seberang Perai Cluster, overseeing three other hospitals. This reduces the need for residents to seek treatment outside the district. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has also secured RM191.8 million in development funds for Penang in 2026, targeting upgrades, clinic repairs, and a new wellness hub. Further projects are underway, including the Bandar Tasek Mutiara and Mak Mandin Health Clinics. An initial study for an additional building at Kepala Batas Hospital has also been approved under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan’s Rolling Plan 1. Additionally, Budget 2026 allocated RM94.6 million for the Kubang Semang Health Clinic and the Seberang Perai Tengah Integrated Health Complex, with MOH and the Public Works Department committed to fast-tracking these developments.

The completion of the HSJ building marks a significant upgrade in healthcare access for Seberang Perai. With expanded facilities and specialist services now available locally, residents benefit from reduced travel times and improved medical support. Ongoing projects under Budget 2026 will further strengthen the region’s health infrastructure in the coming years.
