Saxony-Anhalt Launches Equality Award for Gender Justice Champions
Under the banner "Solidarity and Empowerment: Strengthening Women, Shaping Equality Together," Saxony-Anhalt's Minister for Equality, Petra Grimm-Benne, is calling for applications for the state's Equality Award, which carries prize money of up to €1,000. For the fourth time, the state is honoring individuals and initiatives that demonstrate exceptional commitment and a clear stance in advancing gender equality for women.
Applications will be accepted until May 29, 2026. The Saxony-Anhalt Equality Award highlights the diverse efforts to promote gender equality across the state and supports projects that drive structural improvements for women. It underscores the vital role of equality in fostering a democratic and solidarity-based society, while also addressing the varied lived experiences of women and the challenges of intersectional discrimination.
"Progress in gender equality is always the result of people who take responsibility, persevere, and inspire others," says Grimm-Benne, the award's patron. "Across the state, there are exemplary initiatives that empower women and dismantle systemic disadvantages. In these polarized times, this kind of dedication deserves greater recognition."
The award will be presented in the following categories:
- Category 1: "Empowerment Through Education, Training, and Opportunities" This category recognizes projects that support girls and women in their educational journeys, helping them unlock their full potential. It includes gender-sensitive education, mentoring, and skills development programs, as well as initiatives that open doors in future-oriented fields such as digitalization, science, and skilled trades.
- Category 2: "Solidarity and Networks: Women Supporting Women" Honoring projects that strengthen women through networking, counseling, and collective action, this category focuses on sustainable support systems, intergenerational solidarity, and innovative forms of collaboration—including in rural areas.
- Category 3: "Protection, Respect, and Self-Determination" This award celebrates initiatives that assist women affected by violence, as well as prevention and awareness-raising efforts. It also covers projects combating digital violence and discrimination, along with measures to enhance safety and respect in public spaces.
- Category 4: "Outstanding Personal Commitment to Equality" Recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to gender justice and fair participation.
The first three categories each offer prize money of up to €1,000, while the award for outstanding personal commitment carries €500.
Winners will be selected by an independent panel of experts. The formal award ceremony will take place on August 19, 2026, at the Musikforum Katharinenkirche in the Hanseatic city of Stendal.
