Russia confirms its first mpox case amid strict containment efforts
Russia has recorded its first confirmed case of mpox, according to Rospotrebnadzor. The infection was detected using domestic test kits capable of identifying the virus within hours. Authorities have already taken steps to contain the spread and monitor close contacts of the patient.
The infected individual's home was thoroughly disinfected after the diagnosis. Health officials traced all known contacts and placed them under a 21-day observation period, advising self-isolation as a precaution.
The virus primarily spreads through close physical contact or touching contaminated surfaces. Unlike airborne diseases, mpox does not transmit through the air, reducing the risk of widespread infection. If symptoms appear, those affected will receive immediate medical care.
Globally, Africa remains the hardest-hit region, with over 50,800 cases reported in the past year. Outside Africa, nearly all cases—99%—involve adults over 18, with 97% occurring in men.
Russian health authorities are relying on rapid PCR testing and strict monitoring to prevent further transmission. The situation is being closely watched, though no additional cases have been confirmed so far. Officials continue to emphasise the importance of early detection and isolation for controlling the outbreak.
