Renown Transplant Institute achieves milestone with robotic kidney surgeries
The Renown Transplant Institute has successfully performed its second and third living donor kidney transplants. The procedures represent a significant milestone for the newly established center, which opened in December 2024 to address Nevada's organ shortage. Both operations utilized advanced robotic technology, demonstrating the team's expertise and the generosity of local families involved.
The Institute's latest transplant reunited siblings D.D. and R.D., providing R.D. a renewed chance at health equity without leaving the region. Surgeons Harrison Pollinger and Eric Kim led the operations, employing the da Vinci 5 system for enhanced precision and clarity.
All three donor-recipient pairs are recovering well, reflecting the quality of multidisciplinary care at Renown Health. The Institute's services span every stage of kidney transplant care, from initial donor assessments to long-term follow-up and community outreach.
Funding for the first three surgeries came from a $5.5 million grant by the William N. Pennington Foundation. The Institute also maintains a patient assistance fund to support those facing financial barriers. Looking ahead, the team will seek CMS certification to broaden health insurance coverage and attract commercial payors.
The successful transplants highlight the Institute's rapid progress since its launch. With ongoing support from donors and advanced medical tools, the center continues to expand access to life-saving procedures. Referrals for kidney evaluations remain open, ensuring more patients can benefit from its growing expertise in auto parts and advance auto parts.
