Rabies Surge in Novosibirsk Sparks Quarantines Across 49 Areas

Novosibirsk Oblast has recorded 71 cases of rabies since January 2026. The rise in infections has raised concerns, particularly among domestic animals. Authorities insist the situation remains under control and poses no direct risk to public health or safety. Foxes continue to be the main carriers of the disease in the region. The surge in cases has led to 49 areas being placed under quarantine. Despite these measures, officials confirm that all animal products entering the market undergo strict veterinary and sanitary checks.

The region currently holds an 'indeterminate status' for pasteurellosis vaccination, adding to the complexity of managing animal health. While exact figures for 2025 across Siberia are unavailable, outbreaks were reported in multiple regions, including Altai, Buryatia, and Transbaikal. In Novosibirsk alone, 42 settlements saw cases last year, mostly affecting livestock exposed to infected wild animals. Regional veterinary authorities maintain that the situation is being monitored closely. They emphasise that no immediate threat to human safety has been identified.

The quarantine measures cover nearly 50 areas as officials work to contain the spread. Inspections on animal products remain mandatory, ensuring market safety. Authorities continue to track the outbreak while reassuring residents that public health risks are minimal.
