Putin unveils bold 2030 plan to reshape Russia's Far East economy
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a new socioeconomic strategy for the Far Eastern Federal District. The plan, due by August 2025, will cover development goals through 2030 and aims to transform the region’s economy and infrastructure. Officials must submit a draft to the government for review by mid-July next year. The outgoing strategy delivered strong growth over the past decade. Fixed capital investment in the district rose by 286%, while industrial production jumped by 168%. Housing completions also increased by 1.5 times annually, and mineral extraction expanded by 1.4 times.
The new plan will focus on five key areas: removing infrastructure bottlenecks, attracting investment and technology, boosting science and innovation, raising living standards, and adapting to climate challenges. A central goal is to build a high-tech, diversified economy with modern infrastructure to support population growth. For the Magadan Region, the strategy includes a major transport upgrade to strengthen logistics capacity. The aim is to develop the area as a key mining and logistics hub in the Far East. Health improvements are also a priority, with targets to cut working-age mortality and extend life expectancy.
The draft strategy must reach the government by July 15, 2025, with final approval expected by August 1. If implemented, the plan will shape the region’s economic and social development for the next decade. Key outcomes will include expanded infrastructure, higher investment, and better living conditions across the Far Eastern Federal District.
