Poliklinik in Wittstock to become a model for Brandenburg - Profitable Wittstock Hospital to Close Under Reform—New Polyclinic Planned
Wittstock Hospital in Brandenburg is set to close by early 2027, despite running at a profit. The shutdown follows federal hospital reform rules, leaving the region in need of alternative medical services. Plans for a new polyclinic on the site of an old textile factory are now moving forward.
Four of Brandenburg's five hospitals are losing money, with some facing deficits of tens of millions of euros. Wittstock Hospital, however, has remained profitable—yet it must still close under the reform mandates.
Treatment for heart and stomach conditions will shift to Pritzwalk Hospital. Meanwhile, an emergency medical station will stay open in Wittstock to maintain urgent care access.
Ruppin-Brandenburg University Hospital has proposed running the new polyclinic. The facility aims to blend outpatient and inpatient care efficiently. A working group, formed in late February 2023, has until the end of this month to design a sustainable business model for the centre.
The polyclinic's development seeks to secure long-term healthcare for the area. If the business model succeeds, the site could reopen as a modern medical hub. The project's next steps depend on the working group's findings, due by the end of February.
