Pickleball player survives cardiac arrest after emergency hospital rescue
A man suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing pickleball and was rushed to General Hospital E in critical condition. His heart stopped as he arrived at the hospital gate, prompting an emergency response that ultimately saved his life. Doctors have since warned about the risks of high-intensity sports for vulnerable individuals.
The patient began experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath during the game. His friends quickly took him to General Hospital E, but he collapsed at the entrance, going into cardiac arrest.
The hospital immediately activated its 'red alert' emergency protocol. Medical staff performed chest compressions and delivered two defibrillation shocks, restoring his heartbeat. He regained consciousness shortly after.
An emergency coronary intervention followed, including thrombus aspiration and stent placement. Dr Phan Thảo Nguyên later credited the successful outcome to the hospital's rapid response and advanced medical techniques.
Dr Nguyễn Xuân Dương highlighted the dangers of pickleball, explaining that its high-intensity nature can trigger myocardial infarction in at-risk individuals. He advised regular health check-ups, tailored exercise plans, and a healthy lifestyle to reduce such risks.
During colder weather, he also urged the elderly and those with underlying conditions to take medications as prescribed, seek help for unusual symptoms, and improve first-aid awareness in the community.
The patient survived thanks to quick action from bystanders and hospital staff. However, no specific prevention programs for sport-related cardiac arrests, particularly in pickleball, have been introduced in Hanoi. Authorities continue to emphasise general health precautions and emergency preparedness for high-risk groups.
