Parents sue after ultrasound misses baby's severe leg deformity at birth
A family in Pinhal Novo has taken legal action after their baby was born with a severe leg deformity that went undetected in a prenatal ultrasound. The parents had been repeatedly assured during pregnancy that everything was normal, only to discover the condition after birth.
The case has raised concerns about the reliability of scans at Ceraque, a clinic already facing criticism online for alleged diagnostic errors.
In 2023, the mother underwent a morphological ultrasound at Ceraque in Pinhal Novo. The results came back as normal, with no signs of malformation reported. Throughout the pregnancy, medical staff continued to reassure the family that the baby was developing healthily.
After the birth, however, doctors diagnosed the child with right peroneal hemimelia, type II—the most severe form of the condition. The family now claims that the undetected deformity put both the mother and baby at risk during pregnancy and delivery.
The mother has since filed a formal complaint with the Public Ministry, arguing that the ultrasound failed to identify the issue. Ceraque has responded by stating that some malformations may not be detectable in standard scans. The clinic also maintains that its report showed no anomalies at the time of examination.
Frustrated by the lack of support from public health services, the family has turned to private medical care. They are now pursuing compensation, alleging medical negligence. Their case follows a pattern of similar complaints online, where other patients have accused Ceraque of rushed ultrasounds and incorrect diagnoses in recent years.
The family's legal action highlights ongoing concerns about diagnostic accuracy at Ceraque. While the clinic insists that certain malformations can be missed, the parents argue that better screening could have prevented unnecessary risks.
No official records confirm the total number of complaints against the clinic since 2020, but online reviews suggest this may not be an isolated incident.
