A new study has uncovered a potential link between pancreatic fat and cardiometabolic risks in young people with obesity. Researchers at a Danish hospital examined 283 children and adolescents, finding that higher levels of fat in the pancreas were tied to several health concerns. The findings suggest this fat could act as an early warning sign for future problems. The research took place at The Children's Obesity Clinic in Holbæk University Hospital, Denmark. Scientists used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure fat levels in the pancreas, liver, and around the organs without invasive procedures. They focused on participants aged 7 to 19, all of whom had obesity.
The results showed that those with more pancreatic fat also had higher BMIs and waist-to-height ratios. Additionally, increased fat in the pancreas was connected to elevated diastolic blood pressure, liver fat, and visceral fat. However, no clear links were found with systolic blood pressure, fasting insulin, glucose levels, or cholesterol markers.
One key observation was a rise in C-peptide levels, which often signals insulin resistance and stress on beta cells. The study's design, being cross-sectional, means it cannot prove cause and effect. Researchers have called for further investigations to confirm these patterns in different groups and explore whether reducing pancreatic fat early in life could lower long-term risks. The findings point to pancreatic fat as a possible biomarker for identifying young people at greater cardiometabolic risk. While the study does not establish direct causes, it highlights the need for deeper research into fat distribution and health outcomes. Future work may determine if targeting this fat could help reduce risks in children and adolescents with obesity.
