Ontario launches free flu, COVID-19 and expanded RSV vaccines this fall
Ontario is rolling out free flu shots, updated COVID-19 vaccines, and expanded RSV immunisations this autumn. The programmes begin on October 29, 2024, with RSV protection for infants and high-risk children starting November 4. Health officials urge residents to take advantage of the vaccines, especially those most vulnerable to severe illness. Starting October 29, all Ontarians aged six months and older can receive their next COVID-19 vaccine if at least six months have passed since their last dose or infection. Free flu shots will also be available at the same time. Dr. Kieran Moore, the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health, has stressed the importance of vaccination, particularly for people aged 65 and over, as well as those with higher risks of complications. Both vaccines can be safely administered together.
The province has also expanded its RSV immunisation programme. Infants and high-risk children up to 24 months can access the Beyfortus® vaccine for free from November 4. Pregnant women are eligible for a single dose of Abrysvo® to protect their newborns from birth to six months. Additionally, Ontario now offers publicly funded RSV vaccines—such as Arexvy or Abrysvo—to older adults in long-term care, Elder Care Lodges, and retirement homes. This makes it the first province in Canada to fund such a programme for seniors. By April 2026, British Columbia, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador had followed Ontario's lead, introducing similar RSV protection for eligible seniors aged 60 or 75 and older in high-risk groups. The expanded programme in Ontario alone is expected to help over 200,000 families access free immunisations. Vaccines are available at local pharmacies, public health units, and primary care providers. Officials have emphasised the convenience of getting both flu and COVID-19 shots in a single visit.
The expanded immunisation programmes aim to reduce severe illness from respiratory viruses this winter. Free access to flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines covers a wide range of age groups, from infants to older adults. Residents are encouraged to check their eligibility and book appointments early.
