Ontario kicks off early flu shots to shield vulnerable groups first

Ontario has launched its flu vaccination programme earlier than most other regions. This week, shots are being offered to seniors, long-term care residents, hospital staff and high-risk patients. The wider rollout for everyone aged six months and older will begin on 27 October.

The flu vaccine helps the immune system recognise and fight the virus. It takes roughly two weeks for full protection to develop. Studies show it lowers the risk of severe illness and hospital stays.

Children under five face higher risks from flu complications. Their smaller airways and weaker immunity make them more vulnerable. About three-quarters of child flu deaths involved an underlying chronic condition like asthma. Ontario's phased approach prioritises those most at risk. Seniors, people with lung conditions, and healthcare workers are among the first to receive shots. Most other provinces and territories plan to start their programmes in mid-October. A recent study found only one in four flu patients had been vaccinated. This highlights gaps in coverage, even among high-risk groups.

The vaccine remains the best defence against severe flu outcomes. Ontario's early start aims to protect the most vulnerable before flu season peaks. Full eligibility for all residents aged six months and up will open later this month.
