Nursing Students Transform Hospital’s Farewell Room for Grieving Families

A newly redesigned farewell room has opened at Wolfsburg Clinic’s pathology department. The project was led by third-year nursing students, who transformed the space into a warm and comforting area for families. Local officials, including Mayor Dennis Weilmann, attended the inauguration ceremony last week.

The idea for the renovation came from nurse Sandra Müller in 2023. She proposed creating a more homely atmosphere with soft colours, plants, and gentle lighting. The students took charge of planning, budgeting, and carrying out the work themselves.

The team handled painting and minor electrical tasks during their free time. Donations from the clinic’s support association and the citizens’ foundation helped fund the project. The result is a room with bright natural tones and a calming palette, designed to offer comfort to grieving families. At the opening, Dr. Arved Heinz and Dr. Frank Fabian joined Mayor Weilmann to mark the completion of the project. The space now provides a quieter, more personal setting for families saying goodbye to loved ones.

The farewell room is now ready for use, offering a more peaceful environment within the hospital. The project demonstrates how collaboration between staff, students, and donors can improve patient care. Families visiting the pathology department will benefit from the thoughtful redesign.
