Northern Kentucky's Digital Story Map Fights Opioid Crisis with Data and Resources

The opioid crisis in Northern Kentucky reached alarming levels by 2015, with deaths outpacing car accidents nearly fivefold. To tackle the growing problem, the Northern Kentucky Health Department introduced a digital story map in October 2016. The tool was designed to highlight the epidemic’s devastating effects and guide residents toward vital support services. In 2015, the region saw one opioid-related death every 40 hours. The crisis stretched beyond fatalities, straining hospitals, police forces, and public health systems. Blood-borne diseases surged, and emergency responses became overwhelmed.

The story map pulls together five years of data on overdoses, hospital admissions, and police reports. It also pinpoints areas where prevention efforts and resources are most needed. Since its launch, the map has been viewed over 10,000 times and will receive updates every six months. Beyond raising awareness, the platform directs users to addiction treatment, safe drug disposal sites, and Naloxone supplies. Government agencies now rely on the map to target high-risk zones and shape more effective intervention strategies.

The story map continues to serve as a key resource for both residents and officials. It provides clear data on the epidemic’s reach while connecting those in need with life-saving support. Regular updates ensure the tool remains relevant as the community works to curb the crisis.
