Lower Austria's New Tumor Board Revolutionizes Blood Cancer Treatment
St. Pölten University Hospital has launched a new hematologic tumor board to improve cancer care in Lower Austria. This initiative marks the first step toward creating a statewide network of specialised tumor boards. The board focuses on blood cancers and brings together experts to design personalised treatment plans.
Each year, around 45,000 Austrians receive a cancer diagnosis, with nearly 9,000 cases reported in Lower Austria alone. The region's seven oncology centres treat over 30,000 patients annually, making coordinated expertise a priority.
The newly established tumor board pools knowledge from multiple specialists to create tailored treatment strategies. Since its launch, it has already reviewed more than 800 cases.
Three of the seven oncology centres—Krems, St. Pölten, and Wiener Neustadt—were among the first to adopt this collaborative approach. These locations already had their own tumor board structures in place, allowing them to join the new system early. The first central hematology-oncology board will begin operating in these centres before 2026, with all seven clinics expected to participate by the start of that year. The Lower Austrian Health Agency has broader plans for the network. Beyond blood cancers, the initiative will expand to include lung and neuro-oncology tumor boards in the future. The goal is to strengthen cooperation between specialised centres and ensure patients receive the most advanced care available.
The tumor board's introduction sets the foundation for a wider network across Lower Austria. With over 800 cases already assessed, the system aims to enhance treatment precision and patient outcomes. Expansion into other cancer specialties is planned as the network grows.
