Legionella bacteria found in German pool's contaminated water system
Visitors to Thieder Bad indoor swimming pool in Salzgitter have been warned about Legionella bacteria in the showers. A notice was put up after tests revealed contamination in the facility's water system. The highest reading came from the men's showers, where levels reached 700 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres.
The city of Salzgitter confirmed the presence of Legionella on 19 January 2026. A sign was immediately posted, advising pool users to consider their own health risks before using the showers. The entire water system was classified as moderately contaminated.
The following day, the pool operator hired a specialist remediation company. Inspectors visited the site on 20 January to assess the problem. Plans were then put in place to eliminate the bacteria and prevent further spread.
The contamination has prompted swift action, with measures now underway to clean the water system. Pool visitors have been given clear warnings while the issue is resolved. The city and operator are working to ensure the facility meets safety standards again.
