Residents of Komi Gain Access to Cutting-Edge Minimally Invasive Heart and Vascular Treatments
The Komi Republic's Clinical Cardiology Dispensary has become the first medical facility in the region to adopt advanced minimally invasive techniques for treating heart and vascular diseases, the republic's Ministry of Health reports. The initiative was launched during a scientific-practical conference attended by some of Russia's leading cardiac surgeons.
Over two days, top experts and local physicians shared best practices and discussed the latest innovations in treating acute myocardial infarction, congenital heart defects, vascular pathologies, and progressive heart failure—conditions that remain among the most pressing health challenges in the region and across the country. Nearly half of all deaths in Russia are linked to cardiovascular diseases, prompting doctors to seek out and implement more effective and safer treatment methods.
As part of the conference, surgeons from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Arkhangelsk conducted live demonstrations of groundbreaking procedures at the Cardiology Dispensary—techniques that will soon become standard practice in Komi. All operations performed using these new methods are minimally invasive, significantly reducing recovery times compared to traditional surgery.
One such innovation is a mini-thoracotomy heart valve replacement, in which a patient with a heart defect received a new valve not through a large sternal incision, as in conventional open-heart surgery, but via a small access point between the ribs. This approach drastically cuts rehabilitation time.
Another breakthrough is the EKOS protocol, a novel treatment for pulmonary embolism—a life-threatening condition. Using ultra-thin instruments, doctors deliver medication and ultrasound directly to the clot in the pulmonary artery. Over several hours, the combination precisely and safely dissolves the blockage while minimizing the drug load on the patient's body.
The conference also showcased one-day laser varicose vein treatment, eliminating the need for hospitalization. Six patients underwent the procedure during the master class, performed in an outpatient setting. Through micro-incisions, doctors inserted a catheter—no thicker than two millimeters—into the affected veins. Guided by ultrasound, the laser targeted the damaged areas from within, allowing patients to return home just hours later.
The event demonstrated how the expertise of leading specialists, paired with state-of-the-art technology, is transforming cardiac care—offering patients in Komi not just longer lives, but a higher quality of life.
