Kamchatka's pneumonia surge doubles in 2024, hitting elderly hardest

Kamchatka saw a sharp rise in community-acquired pneumonia cases during the first half of 2024. Official figures show 699 infections, double the number recorded in the same period last year. The increase has affected multiple age groups, with elderly residents hit the hardest. The most vulnerable group was people over 65, who experienced the highest number of cases. Adults aged 40 to 64 followed as the second most affected demographic. Children between 7 and 14 ranked third in infection rates.

The surge was particularly striking among younger children. Cases in those under 14 jumped by 3.4 times compared to the first half of 2023. Despite the rise, no deaths from non-COVID pneumonia were reported during this period.

The total number of infections reached 699, marking a significant increase from previous years. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. No fatalities have been linked to these cases so far.
