Johor's Pasir Gudang Hospital races to fill 59% staff shortage by September

Pasir Gudang Hospital (HPG) has begun operating in phases, though only 41% of its staff positions are currently filled. The facility, designed with 304 beds, now has 157 in use. A recent decree from Johor’s regent now demands the hospital become fully functional without delay. HPG was originally set to open in stages from August 1, 2025. However, technical problems and a lack of medical staff forced the state to postpone its full launch. Instead, the hospital started limited operations late last year to serve the local community.

So far, 14 specialist clinics and clinical services are running at full capacity. Yet, with only 931 of 2,271 positions filled, the Johor government is pushing to recruit the remaining 59% of staff by September. The state also plans to have all 304 beds operational by the same deadline. The urgency follows a decree from Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Johor’s regent, ordering immediate full operations. Authorities are now accelerating hiring and resolving technical hurdles to meet this demand.

HPG’s phased opening has already brought essential services to Pasir Gudang, but the hospital still faces staffing and capacity challenges. With the regent’s order in place, the state must fill over half its vacancies and activate all beds by September. The push aims to ensure the hospital meets the region’s healthcare needs in full.
