Japan Approves AI-Powered Cardiac Tool for National Reimbursement by 2025
Japan has approved national reimbursement for MedHub-AI's AutocathFFR System, a breakthrough in coronary artery disease (CAD) assessment. The decision by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) takes effect on October 1, 2025. This move marks a significant step forward for AI-driven cardiac care in the country.
CAD remains the leading cause of death and illness worldwide, including in Japan. The introduction of this technology aims to provide clinicians with faster, more consistent diagnostic tools during coronary angiography.
AutocathFFR is the first fully automated, real-time AI-based solution for measuring fractional flow reserve (FFR). Unlike traditional methods, it eliminates the need for pressure wires or hyperemic drugs. Instead, it applies advanced AI algorithms directly to standard angiographic images, delivering instant and reproducible results.
The system integrates smoothly into existing cath lab workflows, reducing operator dependency and cutting analysis time. Its design ensures consistency across different patients and medical centres, making it practical for everyday use. This sets it apart from 3D-based FFR solutions, which often require additional steps and equipment.
Reimbursement approval in Japan confirms the clinical and economic benefits of AutocathFFR. The decision also strengthens MedHub-AI's partnership with Terumo Corporation, a key player in Japan's medical device market. With this green light, hospitals across the country can now adopt the technology, expanding access to advanced CAD diagnostics.
The reimbursement approval paves the way for wider adoption of AutocathFFR in Japan's healthcare system. Physicians will gain access to a tool that speeds up CAD assessments while maintaining precision. The move underscores MedHub-AI's commitment to improving coronary physiology evaluation globally.
