Hamburg's Groß-Sand Hospital to shut down by June 2023, leaving 350 jobless

Groß-Sand Hospital in Hamburg will close permanently by June 30, 2023. The decision follows months of failed negotiations over its sale, leaving 350 employees without jobs. Residents now face uncertainty about future access to medical services in the area. The Archdiocese of Hamburg, which owns the hospital, confirmed the shutdown after talks collapsed. The Social Affairs Authority had suspended confidential discussions despite an agreed purchase price. Both sides have since traded blame, with the Archdiocese criticising the SPD-led authority for the breakdown.

Last summer, the hospital's emergency department and surgical unit were already closed. The Wilhelmsburg Medical Association has warned that a local clinic cannot replace the full services of a hospital. Meanwhile, 350 staff members received termination notices as a direct result of the closure. SPD and Green Party lawmakers have accused the Archdiocese of failing to maintain the facility. However, no public records detail the financial health of the Archdiocese over the past five years or its capacity to fund medical operations. The closure leaves residents with fewer healthcare options and raises concerns about gaps in emergency care.

With the hospital's final closure set for June 30, 2023, the community must now look for alternative medical services. The loss of 350 jobs and reduced healthcare access will have lasting effects on Wilhelmsburg. The dispute between the Archdiocese and authorities remains unresolved, leaving no immediate solution in sight.
