Flu and respiratory infections threaten high-risk patients, experts warn
Respiratory infections like the flu pose serious risks to vulnerable groups, health experts have warned. Pregnant women, new mothers, and those with chronic conditions face higher chances of severe complications. A pulmonologist in Omsk Oblast, Russia, has highlighted the dangers for these high-risk patients.
Dr. Sergei Gundarov, an independent pulmonologist working with health authorities in Omsk Oblast, stressed that flu and similar infections can make existing illnesses worse. He noted that diabetes patients often see their health decline sharply after catching respiratory viruses.
Viral infections also take a heavy toll on people with heart problems. Patients with cardiovascular diseases may experience sudden worsening of their heart health, including heart failure. The flu can push their bodies into decompensation—a state where the heart can no longer function properly. Pregnant women and new mothers are among the most at-risk groups. For them, the flu can lead to severe respiratory syndrome, which in some cases proves fatal. Children, too, remain highly vulnerable to complications from respiratory infections.
The warnings come as health officials urge extra precautions for those in high-risk categories. Chronic illness sufferers, pregnant women, and young children must take steps to avoid infections. Without proper care, even common viruses can lead to life-threatening consequences.
