Dubai Health Authority unveils new asthma management guidelines for better breathing

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has released new guidelines for managing asthma to mark World Asthma Day. The condition remains one of the most widespread chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. Officials stress that better awareness can lead to improved breathing and long-term health. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes airway narrowing and heightened sensitivity. Common triggers include dust, pollen, smoke, respiratory infections, and even cold air or strong perfumes. Physical exertion can also provoke symptoms in some individuals.

Poorly controlled asthma often results in frequent symptoms, disrupted sleep, overuse of rescue inhalers, and limitations on daily life. The DHA highlights five key steps for effective management: avoiding known triggers, sticking to prescribed treatments, using preventive inhalers, keeping up with vaccinations, and attending regular medical check-ups.

However, many patients make critical errors in handling their condition. These include relying only on quick-relief inhalers, stopping medication without advice, using inhalers incorrectly, and dismissing early warning signs. Three severe symptoms demand urgent care: extreme breathing difficulty, no improvement after using a rescue inhaler, and trouble speaking or bluish lips. The DHA’s guidelines aim to reduce complications by promoting consistent treatment and trigger avoidance. Recognising early warning signs and seeking prompt help can prevent life-threatening situations. Proper management allows those with asthma to maintain an active and healthier lifestyle.
