Con Dao's new dialysis unit ends mainland trips for kidney patients

Côn Đảo Military-Civilian Medical Centre has begun offering life-saving dialysis treatment for the first time. The facility, located on the remote island of Côn Đảo, launched its new unit on May 6, 2023. Before this, patients with chronic kidney failure had no choice but to travel to the mainland for regular care. The centre’s first three patients with chronic kidney failure have now been successfully treated. This achievement follows months of preparation, including technical training and knowledge transfer from specialists at Thống Nhất Hospital. The project is part of a broader doctor rotation programme introduced by the city Department of Health in September 2022, which sends expert medical staff from leading hospitals to support island facilities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tăng Chí Thượng, director of the city Department of Health, highlighted the importance of bringing specialist care closer to patients. The programme aims to reduce the need for long and costly journeys, easing both financial and emotional strain on those requiring ongoing treatment. With the new unit operational, the centre has also strengthened its ability to handle emergencies and complex medical cases. Local staff have now mastered advanced techniques, ensuring that residents no longer face the burden of relocating for critical care.

The dialysis unit’s launch marks the end of mandatory mainland trips for kidney patients in Côn Đảo. Residents with chronic conditions can now receive treatment locally, cutting travel costs and improving access to essential services. The success of the programme reflects the city’s commitment to expanding medical expertise across remote areas.
