Common Medications and Supplements May Be Silently Damaging Your Kidneys

Many everyday medicines and supplements can harm kidney health without people realising it. A simple blood or urine test can check how well the kidneys are working. Yet most cases of chronic kidney disease go undetected, even though millions are affected. Certain drugs pose a risk to kidney function, even in healthy individuals. NSAIDs—common painkillers like ibuprofen—can cause problems, particularly when mixed with diuretics or blood pressure medications. Long-term antibiotic use has also been linked to kidney damage, with penicillin, cephalosporins, and sulfonamides among the most concerning.

Supplements carry risks too. Unlike prescription drugs, they are not strictly regulated by the FDA, meaning labels may not list all ingredients. Some have been tied to kidney injury, even in people with no prior health issues. Underlying conditions raise the likelihood of kidney problems. Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and high cholesterol all increase the risk. Despite this, many remain unaware of their kidney health. In the US alone, an estimated one in five men and one in four women live with chronic kidney disease.

A basic blood or urine test can reveal early signs of kidney trouble. But with so many common medications and supplements affecting kidney function, awareness remains low. Health experts stress the importance of regular check-ups, especially for those with existing risk factors.
