Charité and Schwarz Digits unite to revolutionize fragmented health data management
Charité University Hospital and Schwarz Digits have launched a joint venture to streamline health data management. The new company, Schwarz Charité Health Data GmbH, will develop a platform called HIVEPRO to unify fragmented medical records from different hospital systems. The goal is to make this information more accessible for clinical use while keeping data securely under hospital control.
The partnership builds on years of prior research, including work from the HiGHmed Consortium. Since 2016, this group has explored ways to structure medical data across institutions as part of Germany's Medical Informatics Initiative. Their efforts demonstrated that cross-institutional data consolidation is possible, though the exact number of participating hospitals remains unspecified.
The new platform, HIVEPRO, will run on STACKIT, Schwarz Digits' cloud infrastructure. All data processing will take place in Germany to comply with European data protection laws. Hospitals contributing to the system will maintain full ownership of their datasets, even as the platform integrates information from various source systems. Ownership of the joint venture is split, with Schwarz Digits holding a 75% stake and Charité retaining 25%. The collaboration aims to bridge gaps between isolated health records, improving efficiency for medical professionals without compromising data security.
The launch of Schwarz Charité Health Data GmbH marks a step toward more connected healthcare systems. HIVEPRO will allow hospitals to share and access structured medical data while keeping control of their own records. The platform's compliance with EU data laws ensures that patient information remains protected throughout the process.
