California to Give 400 Free Diapers to Every Newborn Starting Now

California will now provide 400 free diapers to every newborn in the state. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the initiative on May 8, aiming to ease financial pressure on families. The program comes as rising costs leave many struggling to afford essential supplies for their children. The new scheme will see the state partner with Baby2Baby, a non-profit organisation, to distribute diapers to families upon hospital discharge. Governor Newsom estimated that California would hand out 40 million diapers this year through the programme. By buying in bulk, the state hopes to challenge high retail prices and make diapers more affordable.

The need for support is clear. The Urban Institute found that nearly 8 million children in the U.S. lack enough diapers. Baby2Baby’s co-CEOs highlighted that one in two American families faces difficulty affording them. On average, diapering a child costs around $100 a month, yet most families can only manage about $65. Newsom framed the effort as part of a wider strategy to improve affordability for parents. Molly Sheahan of the California Catholic Conference welcomed the move, calling it a vital step in helping families with young children. Baby2Baby also expressed gratitude for the governor’s commitment to addressing diaper insecurity across the state.

The programme will roll out immediately, targeting newborns and their families at discharge. With 40 million diapers set for distribution, officials aim to reduce financial strain on parents. The partnership with Baby2Baby ensures that supplies reach those who need them most.
