Mini-Hospital in Bad Gandersheim to Close - Bad Gandersheim's mini-hospital closes after just one year of operation
The small clinic at Bad Gandersheim's Regional Health Center will shut its doors at the end of March. Opened just last year, the 25-bed facility was meant to replace the town's former general hospital. Financial struggles and low patient numbers have forced the closure.
The clinic launched in early 2024 as a short-stay inpatient unit. It aimed to provide care for patients needing brief hospital treatment. Despite this focus, too few people used the service, leaving the facility unsustainable.
Another key issue was the lack of fair reimbursement rules for transferring patients. Without proper funding mechanisms, running costs became too high. The decision to close was made after efforts to stabilize finances failed.
Not all services will disappear, however. Outpatient care, including a general practice and a psychiatric day clinic, will continue operating.
The closure leaves Bad Gandersheim without its only short-stay inpatient facility. Residents requiring similar care will now need to travel further for treatment. The remaining outpatient services will stay open, but the loss of the mini-hospital marks a setback for local healthcare access.
