70-Year-Old Inmate Dies of Advanced Lung Cancer in Chattogram Jail

Abdur Rahman Mia, a 70-year-old inmate at Chattogram Central Jail, has died while undergoing cancer treatment. He passed away at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday at 11:30am. His death was confirmed by jail superintendent Syed Shah Sharif.

Mia was arrested on November 17, 2025, under a case filed by Kotwali police. He was later transferred to CMCH on December 24, 2025, after his health worsened. Doctors diagnosed him with advanced lung cancer that had spread to his brain, along with high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

After nearly a month of treatment, he was discharged and returned to jail on January 18, 2026. However, following medical advice, he was readmitted to CMCH on January 26. His death certificate listed carcinoma of the lung with brain metastasis as the primary cause of death, alongside his other conditions.

Mia was originally from Uttar Agrabad, Purba Muhuri Para in Chattogram's Double Mooring area. Jail authorities have notified higher officials, and legal procedures are now underway.

As of February 1, 2026, no other prisoner deaths due to health issues have been reported in Chattogram Central Jail this year. No documented measures to improve medical care in the facility have been found in available records.

Mia's death follows a period of treatment for multiple serious illnesses. The jail has begun the required administrative steps after his passing. No further details on his case or medical care improvements have been released.
