Spanish woman dies by euthanasia after legal battle over 2022 gang rape trauma

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, has died by euthanasia after a lengthy legal struggle. Her case drew international attention following a traumatic gang rape in 2022 that left her paralysed. The decision came after multiple court rulings, including a final verdict from the European Court of Human Rights. Castillo's request for euthanasia began after she survived a violent assault in 2022. The attack resulted in severe injuries, including paralysis, and led to her repeated pleas to end her suffering. Initially, her father opposed the procedure, causing legal delays.

In 2024, Catalan authorities approved her request, but the process was temporarily blocked by her father's objections. The European Court of Human Rights later upheld her right to proceed, clearing the final hurdle. Spain's 2021 euthanasia law, which allows the procedure under strict conditions, has seen over 1,100 approved cases since its introduction. The case has reignited debates over euthanasia, particularly regarding mental health criteria and family consent. While euthanasia remains illegal in Russia, a 2019 VCIOM survey revealed that half of Russians support it for patients with severe illnesses. However, 81% opposed allowing it for all individuals over 60, regardless of health status. Currently, only nine countries worldwide permit euthanasia under specific conditions.

Castillo's euthanasia marks the end of a two-year legal battle that tested Spain's 2021 law. Her case has highlighted ongoing ethical and legal challenges surrounding end-of-life decisions. The ruling sets no immediate precedent for changes in other countries, where euthanasia laws remain unchanged since 2021.
