Mijas charity market raises funds for life-saving defibrillators this Saturday
For anyone who has items lying around that they would like to be put to good use then why not take the family and set up a stall? The event takes place at the car park behind the bedding and home furnishings store on the Carretera de Mijas-Fuengirola, from 10am to 3pm. Stall holders can pitch up for just 10 euros to sell crafts, second-hand treasures, homemade food and charity items. Animals and children are welcome.
Save a Life does incredible work. Not only raising money for much needed equipment, but also first aid training providing people will life-saving skills
SAL was founded by Gerry Hannam after he himself suffered a cardiac arrest, an experience that drove him to ensure others in his community would have a fighting chance if the same happened to them. SAL has now funded and installed ten publicly accessible defibrillators across Mijas, Fuengirola and Alhaurin el Grande, with four placed in Mijas itself and others in Calahonda and La Cala. Each device is sited in a high-footfall location, because when it comes to cardiac arrest, every minute without defibrillation reduces survival chances by around 10%.
SAL's work goes beyond hardware. The charity also runs CPR and First Aid training, giving people the confidence to act in an emergency. At a recent course held at Finca Naundrup in Calahonda, eleven residents completed a full session covering cardiac response for adults, children and infants, and correct use of a defibrillator. The venue and free catering were provided by Finca Naundrup, with Diving with Nic handling organisation and offering participants a discount.
The charity is funded entirely through community fundraising, walks, live music events and markets like this upcoming day in May. So if you have some bits and pieces that you are happy to let go for a great cause, then set up a stall. The Yorkshire Linen SAL Community Fundraiser takes place Saturday, May 2, 10am to 3pm, Carretera de Mijas-Fuengirola, Km 3.5, Mijas. Stall pitches 10€. To book, message via WhatsApp.
