New U.S. News ratings reveal top home health agencies for seniors
Choosing a home health agency after a hospital stay can be overwhelming for millions of older Americans. Many face confusion and stress when selecting the right care provider. A new rating system by U.S. News & World Report has now evaluated over 12,000 Medicare-certified agencies to help families make informed decisions.
The latest rankings reveal significant differences in performance across the country. Out of the agencies assessed, 1,319 earned the top designation of 'high performing' or 'best home health distinction'. These leading providers excelled in key areas, such as helping patients regain mobility, bathe independently, and manage medications more effectively than average agencies.
California led with 151 top-rated agencies, followed by Texas (133) and Florida (105). However, some states had very few high performers—Connecticut, Nebraska, and Washington each listed only five. Another 5,288 agencies met baseline standards and were rated 'as expected', while 4,233 lacked sufficient data for a proper evaluation. Experts recommend planning for home care well before a hospital stay rather than waiting until discharge. The best agencies also stood out for timeliness, starting care on time for 99% of patients—five percentage points higher than the national average of 94%.
The ratings provide a clearer picture of home health quality across the US. Families now have access to performance data that highlights which agencies deliver better outcomes. With proper planning and informed choices, patients can secure more reliable and effective care after leaving the hospital.
