Man dies in suspected carbon monoxide leak at Walsall takeaway restaurant
A man in his 50s has died after a suspected carbon monoxide leak at a takeaway restaurant in Bloxwich, Walsall. Emergency crews rushed to the scene late on Friday evening following reports of the incident. Several people, including responders, required medical attention as a result.
Firefighters, paramedics and police were called to a burger shop on Cresswell Crescent at around 9:40 PM on Friday. A witness at the scene reported seeing CPR being performed on the victim. Seven individuals, including emergency workers, later received treatment, with some taken to hospital.
Nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution while tests were carried out. Residents and shop staff were allowed to return in the early hours of Saturday once the area was declared safe. A local councillor suggested that a generator might have been responsible for releasing the gas. While no specific cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in Walsall's food businesses have been publicly recorded in the past five years, UK-wide figures from the Health and Safety Executive show around 40–60 commercial incidents annually.
The incident remains under investigation, though carbon monoxide is suspected as the cause. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact source of the leak. This marks the first publicly reported fatality linked to such an event in Walsall in recent years.
