Vietnam's first 'day hospital' offers seniors therapy and social care by day
A major rehabilitation hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has launched a new daytime care service for older adults. The programme provides medical treatment, physical therapy, and social activities while allowing patients to return home in the evenings. Officials say the model aims to reduce long-term medication use and support those recovering from chronic illnesses or strokes.
The 'day hospital' service runs from 8am to 4pm daily. Patients receive health check-ups, physiotherapy, group counselling, and activities such as music and art. Each person is given a personalised treatment plan along with meals tailored to their needs.
Transportation to and from the hospital is included. The cost ranges from VNĐ350,000 to 520,000 (US$13-20) per day, depending on the type of therapy. For those with national health insurance, part of the fee is covered.
The hospital is also expanding its services to include long-term care, short-stay options, home-based support, and community health management. Authorities note that the daytime model cuts infection risks and lowers overall healthcare costs compared to full hospitalisation.
The new service targets older patients with chronic conditions or post-stroke recovery needs. It also aims to ease the burden on family caregivers by providing structured daytime support. Health insurance holders will pay reduced rates for the programme.
