UAE Approves Groundbreaking Heart Failure Drug to Save Lives and Reduce Hospitalizations
The UAE has become the second country in the world to approve Inpefa® (sotagliflozin) for treating heart failure. The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) granted authorisation, marking a significant step in the nation's healthcare advancements. Officials have highlighted the drug's potential to improve patient outcomes in a condition that weakens the heart's pumping ability.
Inpefa® is the first dual SGLT1 and SGLT2 inhibitor cleared specifically for heart failure treatment. The medication works by regulating blood glucose levels while also supporting heart and kidney function. Clinical approval covers its use in reducing cardiovascular death, cutting hospitalisations for heart failure, and lowering urgent medical visits.
Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, Director General of EDE, emphasised the UAE's dedication to embracing cutting-edge pharmaceutical solutions. The agency has focused on creating adaptable regulatory pathways to speed up access to innovative therapies. Meanwhile, Ayman Mokhtar, Viatris' Regional President, pledged to ensure the drug's availability for patients across the UAE.
Heart failure remains a chronic and life-threatening condition, impairing the heart's efficiency in circulating blood. The UAE's approval follows earlier clearance in the US, with further authorisations expected in countries like Canada in the coming years.
The EDE's decision positions the UAE as a leader in adopting advanced heart failure treatments. Inpefa® will now be offered to patients, aiming to reduce hospital stays and improve survival rates. The move reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the country's healthcare system with modern medical solutions.
