New Study Probes Long COVID, ME/CFS, and Chemical Sensitivity Links

A new clinical study at the University Medical Center Freiburg is exploring the links between Long COVID, ME/CFS, and multiple chemical sensitivity. Researchers aim to uncover physical and psychological factors behind these often debilitating conditions. The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve scientific understanding of chronic illnesses.

The study, led by the University Center for Naturopathy within the Department of Internal Medicine II, is open to adults aged 18 and older. Participants must have a confirmed diagnosis of Long COVID, ME/CFS, or multiple chemical sensitivity for at least six months.

Those interested will first complete a phone screening before attending a single in-person visit at the Freiburg clinic. During the appointment, researchers will collect blood, urine, and stool samples. They will also analyse heart rate variability and assess gut function, stress levels, and antioxidant markers.

Participation comes at no cost, and volunteers may request personalised feedback on their results. As of February 2026, the exact number of participants remains undisclosed, as the study is still recruiting. Updates can be found on the clinic's official website or via ClinicalTrials.gov.

The research could provide clearer insights into the mechanisms of Long COVID, ME/CFS, and multiple chemical sensitivity. By examining biological and psychological connections, the team hopes to support future treatment approaches. Further details will be shared as the study progresses.
