Russia's Communists Demand Workplace Safeguards Against Geomagnetic Storms
Russia's Communist Party is pushing for new workplace protections during geomagnetic storms. Leader Sergei Malinkovich announced plans to petition the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour. The proposal aims to grant leave or remote work options for those affected by severe space weather.
Malinkovich highlighted the growing intensity of geomagnetic storms over recent years. He warned that these events now pose a serious risk to people with chronic illnesses, particularly those with high blood pressure. Symptoms like fainting or sudden health declines during magnetic fluctuations have raised concerns.
The initiative would allow vulnerable workers to take time off or switch to remote work—even without formal medical documentation. Between 2021 and 2025, eight of the strongest storms (G4/G5 level) struck globally, with major impacts in North America, Scandinavia, and Siberia. The most severe, a G5 storm in May 2024, disrupted infrastructure and heightened health risks.
Malinkovich stressed that current workplace policies do not account for these environmental threats. The party's petition seeks to address this gap by ensuring flexibility for weather-sensitive employees.
If approved, the proposal would mark a first in Russian labour law. Workers with chronic conditions could receive leave or remote options during extreme geomagnetic activity. Officials will now review the petition before deciding on next steps.
