Former conjoined twin gives birth at the hospital that separated her 28 years ago

A woman once part of a pair of conjoined twins has welcomed a baby girl at the same hospital where she was separated 28 years ago. The child, nicknamed 'Tangyuan' to symbolise reunion and good fortune, arrived safely on 22 February 2023.

The mother, Guiying, was one of the conjoined twins successfully separated at Nantong University Hospital in 1997. Her pregnancy required careful monitoring due to a history of congenital heart disease, including a previous Pentalogy of Fallot surgery. During the pregnancy, doctors noted a mild rise in her pulmonary artery pressure, leading to extra precautions.

A multidisciplinary medical team oversaw the delivery to ensure both mother and baby remained safe. The baby girl was born weighing 2,800 grams. The hospital where the twins were separated decades ago has since become a leader in treating complex cases like these.

Since the 1997 operation led by Dr. Chen Jiaqi, advances in medical care for conjoined twins have grown significantly. Improved imaging, such as 3D ultrasounds and MRIs, now allows for better planning. Surgical techniques have also progressed, with minimally invasive methods, better anaesthesia, and innovations in separating shared blood vessels. Dr. Chen's team alone has performed over 20 successful separations, while global cases, like the 2020 Abbott twins in the US, highlight these improvements.

The birth marks a significant moment for both the family and the medical team. The mother's successful delivery, despite her complex medical history, demonstrates the long-term impact of advanced care. The baby's nickname, 'Tangyuan', reflects the joy and hope surrounding her arrival.
